Forget the world beyond and enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings, and yet you are only a short distance from the centre of the atmospheric Border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, steeped in the history of the struggle between English and Scots over centuries of conflict now long passed, and yet preserved in Berwick in the wonderfully intact town walls, and throughout the Borders in the form of spectacular castles, battle sites and grand stately homes.

A stay at Marlborough House or Marlborough Cottage means that you have all this on your doorstep – the promenade and beach only a stone’s throw away, and the delights of the characterful Border towns and the beautiful Borders countryside within easy reach.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is 10 miles south, the striking beauty of St. Abbs Head 15 miles north and Wooler and the Cheviot Hills 15 miles south west: the Border towns of Duns, Coldstream, Kelso, Selkirk, Peebles, Galashiels and Hawick are all within easy reach by car, as are the coastal attractions of Bamburgh, Seahouses, the Farne Islands (seabird and grey seal colonies)and Alnmouth to the south and Eyemouth, Dunbar and North Berwick (Bass Rock seabird colony) to the north, not forgetting the imposing Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter) and Gardens 30 miles south.
Mid-Northumberland villages such as Rothbury, Otterburn and Blanchland lead you on to the Kielder reservoir and leisure area, with amazingly well-preserved sections of the near-2000 year old Hadrian’s Roman Wall nearby.
Edinburgh is around an hour’s drive or train journey to the north, as are Newcastle and the attractions of the Quayside, Sage, Baltic Arts Centre and Gateshead MetroCentre to the south.

Locally there is the Swan Leisure Centre, which has a fitness suite, squash courts and a childrens’ soft-play area (Adventure World), next door is the swimming pool: in the village itself there is a childrens’ open-air play area, paddling pool, amusements and rides, and a football pitch: and, of course, a long sandy beach where at low tide appear rock pools where kids of all ages can search for sea monsters such as crabs, shrimps, sea anenomies and welks!

Cyclists are welcome – the National Cycle Route passes the door and there is open-air but out-of-sight cycle storage available; walkers too – there are numerous walking opportunities north, south and west of us – east is not recommended – see location map!
